An athlete's nightmare - My fair share of injuries

Over the last 18 months I had my fair share of injuries, most likely due to the fact that I haven't been doing any sport for the period prior to me quitting smoking. I have always relied on my good old car or public transport. I was even tired from just walking to the shops, I meant the clothing shop

I had two main injuries, the first one started last year in March 2007 which was later on in August diagnosed as a stress fracture on my left tibia. I worn a removable cast for 6 weeks and the follow X-ray confirmed that I was completely healed, I still wonder why 4 months prior to my last MRI scan the X-ray gave the all clear!

Secondly, this year I had an injury which prevented me from running, it has not yet confirmed what the exact nature of the injury is but I had mainly pain in my groin and a spasm of reasonable size was found in my iliopsoas.

This injury did come on after my first running race of the year in Frimley green, I'm not too sure if the actual race was to blame or it was just a coincidence, although my heart rate was more than 200 during the second half of the race.

This injury is hassling me already for the last 5 months, during the first run of 90 minutes after the Frimley Green race I started having a very tight feeling in my left quads and felt also pain in my right achilles, the pain in my right achilles disappeared after a few days but most likely was caused by trying to take over weight from my left leg which was in pain.

I don't like giving up an objective which I set before my run and definitely do not want to stop for a break during a long run, which now looking back at it I should have let my ego at home and stopped during this run. This was end of January 2008, from here onwards I started initially to limb, with pain every time I went up the stairs when pushing off. This was followed b a complete inactivity from any sport for about 6 weeks, seeing a physiotherapist didn't do any good. At the end of March 2008 I started back to swim in the pool and started biking again, running was absolutely out as every time I pounded my groin was in pain or I could feel my quads swelling. Surprisingly biking was all fine and never caused me any pain. In the middle of March we went on a skiing holiday and yes I was able to ski but with pain, I guess sometimes you need to accept this. In the evenings I was not only exhausted but also in pain. During this period the pain during these evenings seemed to be moving towards my knee. Was the groin pulling through the iliopsoas the knee?

As time went on I became a bit more frustrated knowing that I had to pull out of the Asics Reading 1/2 marathon on the 2nd of March 2008. At the same times things became looking dim to participate in my first ever triathlon either, the Eton super sprints on the 18th of May 2008. I started seeing a chiropractor which wasn't paid by my private medical insurance, I went for about 6 sessions without any luck. According to some type of tests my mussels on the right hand side of my spine are pulling much more to keep me in balance! I learned to keep my wallet out of my right backside pocket as this could cause some imbalance, this is the only good thing that came out to my visits to the chiropractor.

In meantime I had seen a normal GP doctor who put me on anti inflammation tablets for 3 weeks in a row, indeed I couldn't feel the pain but once I stopped taking these tablets the pain came back on.

In the beginning of May I was advised to see an orthopaedic from Joint Reaction for hip and lower back and I had an MRI scan. The MRI scan did not shown any abnormalities apart from two bulging discs which were of no concern to the orthopaedic for the present injury - sure they are going to play up at some time ;-(. in meantime I was still unable to run, we decided to try a steroid injection which was placed in my groin last week (18th June 2008) under full sedation.

Between the day of the MRI diagnosis and the steroid injection I decided to start running again and bear with the pain, my first run at a slow pace for about 10 minutes was fine but I started limping again for up to a day long. I repeated these short runs of 10 minutes a few times after this and noticed that pain was present but became more bearable, maybe my pain levels had increased , but the result was not worse afterwards. Just before my first Triathlon in Windsor I ran maximum 16 minutes so I decided to go ahead with the Triathlon but ensuring that my run was a slow pace. I completed the 5k run in 33 min and 54 seconds, but my condition wasn't worse afterwards.

Yesterday I went for the first time for a run after my steroid injection and felt just fine, I ran for 4.5K in a good pace. Today, the day after, I can feel my groin slightly but I am not concerned.

Has this been the turning point? Do you have an injury which wasn't hugely severe but stopped you from doing activities? Did you get frustrated?
